Large-Format Digital Signage

I was involved with designing and animation digital signage for large venues like stadiums and ballparks as well as smaller format, out-of-home display boards in retail locations. These signs could be simple, like banner ads, with just basic movements or more complex with scrolls that covered an entire halo ring around the top of a scoreboard or upper deck fascia.

The T5 Ring at JFK

JetBlue’s Terminal Five at JFK Airport in New York was an interesting project. It consists of 32 individual screens separated into four groups. I produced several animations for this display showcasing their TrueBlue and Getaways programs.

U.S. Cellular’s Sponsorship and Digital OOH Signs

U.S. Cellular was involved with sponsorships at a number of professional, minor league, and collegiate stadiums. I was asked to produce digital signage for the fascia, scoreboard, floor signs, and halo rings in a number of venues. Each one had different specifications and accepted files in different formats. There were a lot of elements to take into account such as dead zones, cut-outs for broadcast cameras, and making sure that the animation could be seen from any angle when it played.

I developed a calculator for this task to simplify and standardize the process. It let me break the signage down into manageable segments rather than trying to wrap my head around a single 17,580×48 pixel design. These projects were enjoyable challenges where we had to balance timing, readability, and animation to display a message where the sign was not (always) the most important thing people were seeing.

NYCFC and ICC Stadium Signage

Similar to the work for U.S. Cellular, these are digital signs that I created for Degree and Indeed. These were used on-field or in-stadium. The Indeed boards were especially challenging because I had to build signs that were 12,864×64 pixels to match other signs measuring 1,280×48 pixels in the same venue. That particular field, a cricket stadium in Australia, had ten different deliverable sign elements of varying lengths. I did production and motion design at the same time during that project.
